The Storm

Paul got sick last Monday, then baby and I were hit on Wednesday. I made the mistake of going to work on Thursday. By Friday we were a mess.

Baby officially has pneumonia and an ear infection.

Then Henry had a fever, so Joe dragged our mattress into their room. He is the only one who has managed to stay healthy.

We rounded up all our energy after Friday doctor appointments, to get out of the house on Saturday morning for Paul’s first piano recital.

IMG_1047

Our lovely friend (and opera singer) Adriana offered us a space in her two year class (for free) so every Friday we have been going. The class sang a song together and then each student performed.

She accompanied each student.

Short and sweet.image-1499We were nervous, excited, and really out of it.

IMG_1054

We did survive. Afterwards we grabbed smoothies and all went home to sleep.

Baby started coughing and breathing hard so Joe had to head to the ER at 10 pm.

IMG_1072

They can give her the serious medication and of course her little body then has a chance to rest.

IMG_1077

They arrived home early on Sunday and she did not have to be admitted. All we had the energy for was driving over to the Marina and walking around a little, soaking in some Vitamin D.

IMG_1111

The fresh air felt good on our lungs.

IMG_1112

For good measure I took today off. Baby is the one who is still not feeling well. The rest of us only have lingering coughs.

A Friday ritual. A single photo – no words – capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember.

Home Sick

It feels like the never ending saga around these parts

IMG_0998

with stuffy noses and Paul’s fever reaching 104

IMG_0996

they stayed in pajamas all day

IMG_1002

and I only wish I could have stayed home too.

IMG_1304

They love to play together.

IMG_1308

Henry will tease her

IMG_1313

and then look away.

IMG_1314

I love their cheeks.

A Chance

to nap together.

IMG_0969

to pin her hair for the very first time in a barrette.IMG_0974

to spontaneously drive to the top of Signal Hill at Paul’s request.

IMG_1260

to watch Henry jump and climb.

IMG_1281

to see them gather around her, pushing her higher and higher.

IMG_1285to borrow a booster seat and experiment with the boys in the back together.

IMG_1295to let her get messy with paint.

IMG_1270

to play with glow sticks before bed.

IMG_1300

to enjoy the three day weekend.

IMG_1117

Our Valentines

ordered from the computer because I am in love with mini photo cards.

IMG_1187

Paul attached bubbles to his set for his classmates

IMG_1184IMG_1180

while Henry helped add candy to bags for his teachers.

IMG_1198

My students finished publishing poems this week to add some love to our decor

IMG_1199

and I always have my favorites

IMG_1200

or the ones that blow me away because the kids will write straight from their hearts.

IMG_1202

I like to model each piece of writing which means that this student remembered my cake pop writing I modeled last month and incorporated into this amazing homemade gift:

IMG_1205

Each year for whatever reason the kids go overboard with this holiday that is a chance to show love

IMG_1203and I have my own traditions like writing each student their own valentine.

IMG_1207

Of course baby girl had her own outfit for the day

IMG_1218

which Joe was proud to announce that she melted hearts.

IMG_1224We arrived at our favorite, within walking distance restaurant: Lola’s

IMG_1233

and made it right between the lunch wave and later dinner/date rush meaning we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. We made ourselves at home and sat in the big booth at the window.

IMG_1236

As we walked home, I told Joe, my only wish was that today was Friday.

IMG_1229

I’m off to sleep.

The Games

They set up the firetruck and put her inside, while Paul fights fires Henry plays peekaboo.

IMG_1147

She giggles and hops up and down at him.

IMG_1149

Then he scurries toward her pinching her chubby legs.

IMG_1151

We break for dinner and I swear these divided plates are a life saver, when my brain is tired and I want to feed my children a balanced meal in proportion.

IMG_1152

The games continue later with Henry being a dad who takes his many babies to the doctor (note: there is one in the stroller, one in Paul’s lap, and one on the doctor table).

IMG_1174

Dr. Paul listens to her heart and asks if baby has been coughing.

IMG_1177

I love the role play of real life.

Before and After Bath

The recommendation from the pediatrician
is to use cream and olive oil
IMG_1124

rubbed on the scalp two hours before bath.

IMG_1141

This will slowly peel the cradle cap off (now that she’s a year).

IMG_1166

She has a brush and is thrilled to use it

IMG_1169

and I already see a difference.

IMG_1170Do you??

Olivine’s First Birthday

spread out over a couple days
starting with her first carousel ride
IMG_0869

and presents

IMG_0883

with lots of tissue paper

IMG_0878

a cake made by Grammy

IMG_0931

that lasted seconds before she destroyed it.

IMG_0937

For her first cake

IMG_0939

she did a fantastic job.

IMG_0943

We had fun just watching her.

IMG_0961

A birthday hat (in her birthday suit),

IMG_1047

more presents including her first baby doll,

IMG_0899

and cards.

IMG_0893

A fancy dress from The Disney Store

IMG_0915
made special by being picked out by Ji’chan.

IMG_0904

She is his princess and clearly adored.

IMG_0917

And that was all before her birthday, because she woke up to a breakfast party

IMG_0981

with yogurt

IMG_0982

and party favors

IMG_0987

and pajamas

IMG_0988

and fancy straws

IMG_0992

and her balloon from church last night.

IMG_1011We even washed her dress so she could wear it again.

IMG_1012

Yes we went overboard without intending to.

IMG_0984

We gave her a couple more gifts

IMG_1069

and then went for her one year well baby appointment.

IMG_1014

She is healthy which was our other birthday wish
IMG_1020

and we feel a bit in shock.
Paul even remembered, as we drove to the doctor,
that morning a year ago when he first met his baby sister
as he described how tiny she was I couldn’t help but cry.
They are happy tears but really I can’t believe our little girl
is turning one today.
She has been our “cherry on top” which Joe
describes in the analogy of our life
feeling a bit like a sundae we don’t deserve.
We love you Miss Olivine.

The Week Ending

is always a glorious feeling
especially when there are treats waiting
IMG_0827

Paul insightfully asked if our kitchen was a factory
which I admit it sometimes feels like that
with dishes and food going in and out

IMG_0828

before

IMG_0848

and after with baby food staples

IMG_0865

and a chance to go through last week’s hand me downs

IMG_0834

thank you Jenny and Luke for clothes, costumes,

IMG_0830

and an awesome pair of converse

IMG_0832

Plus an opportunity to participate in a research study

IMG_0840

at the Language Lab at USC

IMG_0844

for 11-13 month olds

IMG_0856

Already busy and not even to the best parts of the weekend.
